Once upon a time, there lived a poor farmer with his wife in the countryside of Iceland. They had a cow named Búkolla that they loved dearly and a son that they weren’t all too fond of.  And no wonder!  The cow was absolutely lovely.  She had a beautiful red coat with snow-white patches and gave plenty of creamy milk every day when the farmer’s wife came to milk her.  The son however, gave no milk at all and was rather plain to look at.

One morning, when the farmer’s wife went to Búkolla’s stable, she found to her horror that the beloved cow was gone!

The story of Búkolla, possibly Iceland’s most beloved traditional fairy tale, features a magical cow named Búkolla and her boy pitted against two evil troll-sisters.

The music, by Austrian/Icelandic composer Helmut Neumann, uses elements of traditional Icelandic chant including numerous parallel, open 5ths within the context of an adapted “Klangreihen” compositional technique after Otmar Steinbauer.  The illustrations, by American/Austrian artist Judann Weichselbraun, are traditional watercolor paintings including views of traditional Icelandic landscapes as well as a beautiful red cow and larger-than-life trolls.

Helmut Neumann, geboren in Wien 1938, aufgewachsen in Österreich, gearbeitet in Island, Innsbruck, Klosterneuburg, hat komponiert, gelehrt, gestaltet – ist gealtert!
Diente dem Staat, Firmen, Schülern, oft ohne entsprechende Bezahlung, aber mit Freude.
Schreibt Klangreihenmusik, oft ernst – oft witzig, für Grosse und Kleine, für Musikfreunde aber auch für Kenner! Übersetzte isländische Texte, gab Bücher heraus und Noten.
Schrieb am Bùkolla – Märchen einige Wochen, dachte an seine eigene Kindheit dabei und hofft, dass das isländische Märchen Jung und Alt gefallen wird.

Judann Weichselbraun, Illustratorin

Malerei, Gesang und ihre Familie sind nur einige von Judann Weichselbrauns Leidenschaften und manchmal bedarf es all ihres Organisationstalents (und die Geduld ihres Mannes) um alles unter einen Hut zu bringen.
Ihr künstlerisches Interesse erstreckt sich von Aquarell über chinesische Malerei und Eitempera bis hin zur Verarbeitung von Blattgold und Malen mit Acrylfarben. Ihre Spezialgebiete sind Portrait- und Landschaftsmalerei, Trompe-l’oeil und Art Déco. Judann Weichselbraun illustrierte unter anderem das Kinderbuch “Let’s Play Ball”, kann auf zahlreiche Ausstellungen in Wien und Umgebung sowie in Santa Barbara (Kalifornien) und New York zurückblicken.
Judann Weichselbraun ist Mitglied zahlreicher KünstlerInnen-Vereinigungen, wie etwa der Los Padres Watercolor Society, der Santa Barbara Art Association und der Goleta Valley Art Association.
