Once upon a time in a very small village there lived an old woman who made the most delicious coconut cakes. People would come from all around just to buy her cakes at the village market. One day, while walking to market, the old lady tripped on a stone and her sack fell to the ground, spilling the cakes all over the ground. “Oh my, look at all the trouble I’ve got here,” she said. “I can’t believe what trouble I’ve got. Now I’ll have to go right back home!”
Monkey, sitting in a tree above the road, had been watching the woman and had heard everything. He was very curious about her trouble, and when she left, he scurried down the tree and went to investigate the trouble scattered across the road. He tasted one of the coconut cakes and said loudly, “This trouble is most delicious! I must go and buy some more!” So monkey hopped right into town, went to the nearest merchant and said, “I’d like to buy some trouble please…
The light-hearted tale from Trinidad, “How Monkey Looked for Trouble” depicts a cheeky monkey with a limited vocabulary and a soft spot for coconut cakes. The music, by Austrian/Korean composer Erika Chun is virtuosic and playful in nature and is perfectly complemented by illustrator Hilal Avci’s colorful pictures.
Erika Chun, composer
Erika Chun was born in Korea in 1984. She grew up in a musical family and started to play the piano at the age of 10. Her extraordinary talent was not to be overlooked.
She came to Vienna in 1994 to study at the Vienna University of Music and has since won several prizes in international piano competitions and has performed in the Musikverein and other concert halls all over the world.
Not only is she a renowned concert pianist, but she is also a composer. For Talespin, she composed the music for the witty tale of “How Monkey Looked for Trouble”.
Hilal Avci, illustrator
Hilal Avci trägt einen europäischen und asiatischenTeil mit sich. Geprägt von beiden Kulturen, hat die 23 Jahre junge Türkin ihr Abitur in Deutschland abgeschlossen und ist nun seit drei Jahren in Wien als Künstlerin und Designerin aktiv. Ihr Grafik Design Studium an der Universität für angewandte Kunst neigt sich dem Ende zu. Eigene Projekte begleiten sie durch den Alltag! Ihrer Meinung nach gehören die Kunstgattungen nicht getrennt. Intuition steht immer groß im Mittelpunkt, gefolgt von Konzept. Von Video, Film, Fotografie, Illustration bis hin zu Layout und Typografie ist alles Teil ihrer kreativen Welt.
